Roll 01
Horse.
Twenty rolls. Seven hundred and twenty frames. One horse, very far away.
Run the loupe over any sheet. It will not help.
Horse.
Same horse. Different day. Possibly the same day.
Bracketed the horse, plus and minus one stop. The horse was unchanged.
The horse leaves in frame 31. I stayed for the last five frames.
Wind.
Horse, sky, more sky.
Horse, possibly a cow. Group consensus: horse.
Tilted the horizon. The horse did not notice.
Three stops under. The horse is in there somewhere.
Shot from inside the sleeping bag.
Horizon studies, continued. Horse studies, continued.
Down to one Clif bar. The horse looks well fed.
Lens cap. All thirty-six.
Recovered. Horse.
Light leak. The back of the camera was open for part of this conversation.
A second horse. Even farther away.
The horse walked the length of the roll. I did not.
Got closer. Frames 13 to 15. Then the horse left for good.
No horse. Photographed where the horse had been.
The keeper is on this roll.
I held all twenty rolls up to the sky, one at a time, and nodded at two frames. Roll 18, frame 14. Roll 20, frame 22. It is the same horse. I have never been prouder of anyone.
